Gap velvet top: a winner (now with photos)

I just found the most beautiful velvet top at the Gap. It's a casual kimono-sleeve tee that drapes beautifully, made of a rayon/silk blend. It's trendy and super high quality -- it could easily come from Rag & Bone or the like. The cut is really loose, so it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But it reminds me of the Elizabeth Suzann silk tee that people love, as worn by Caroline at Unfancy: http://www.un-fancy.com/outfit.....four-ways/

I ordered it online after trying it in the store because there's a better discount online (40% off today). I do want to take photos once it arrives to make sure it's not too overwhelming. XS was definitely the right size for me. With my short arms, I might shorten the sleeves an inch or so.

I think I could wear it with faded jeans to work and not feel too fancy. I was wearing high waist vintage-y gray jeans (in finds for reference) and it was a great combo.

Click through to watch the model walking, because the photos are all pretty meh.

Edit: the top arrived, and I wore it to a party last night with my new (used) high waist jeans and my new Paul Green shoes. It's almost overwhelming on me but my boyfriend really liked it, which is a good indicator that it moves enough in person to not look totally shapeless. The velvet is so soft - 80% rayon, 20% silk. I added some photos of yesterday's outfit, though the sunlight was coming straight through the window, so they're not the best. I think I'll probably leave the sleeves this length.

It's a departure for me in style, dressiness, and fabric (currently my only synthetic top). I'm not sure how much I'll wear it, but I think I like it!

The top is a winner indeed.  I watched the model walking and I love the short top.  I am happy for you.

Looks like you got the last XS! Beautiful top.

  • rachylou replied 6 years ago

    Nice!!

  • chouette22 replied 6 years ago

Oh that looks so good! Did you get the black one then? If you shorten the sleeves, will you keep the detail (different fabric texture) the same? I  might give the pink one a try if it comes back in the XS as I don't have that color in my closet at all.

Ooh love it! I was looking at pants on Gap website and noticed that top. Can't wait to see it on you!

I was trying to see what the arms will look like with the arms lifted but I can't wait to see you wear the outfit I love the sleeves and I was trying to the hem of the Garment. I think it's speak to a really feminine energy.

Fab. The pink is lovely too. Would love to see it on, Greyscale.

  • Sara L. replied 6 years ago

Oh, it looks rich.  I'm loving all the velvet this season.  I don't own any yet, but I like the richness of the fabric.

  • replied 6 years ago

    I like it a lot!
I think it would be great for work too--not too much.

  • Greyscale replied 6 years ago

It arrived, and I think I love it even if it's JFE. Photos added to the original post.

Looks great! I think the shape and the trend of daytime velvet means this top can go dressy or casual.

I tried the pink and didn't like the colour on me so I got the black too. It'll be perfect for events at school this season.

I very much want a velvet top for the Holidays.  Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Elizabeth P replied 6 years ago

Oh wow, I think this is FABULOUS on you!

  • Muffin replied 6 years ago

Ohhh, that looks great on you!

  • skylurker replied 6 years ago

Love it on you. Looks difficult to layer a topper over large 3/4 sleeves : would that be a problem?

  • merwoman replied 6 years ago

Gorgeous on you! And have to confess, after i read your description, I ordered it to:-).  Like you, I'm not sure how many wears I will get from it, but it will work in my special occasion capsule, and the price was right for such a beautifully structured garment.

  • viva replied 6 years ago

It's beautiful. I love both colors, and the velvet sounds just luscious! The shape is modern and clean enough to work well with your style. Great choice.

  • Aquamarine replied 6 years ago

It looks fantastic on you. Enjoy!

My daughter tried on the pink one, and it was overwhelming on her petite frame, so I agree you need to size down. Also, the pink top was oddly slightly sheer, so I think it needs a camisole.

  • Angie replied 6 years ago

Looks great. I like the way you styled it with grey jeans.

I've looked at it a couple of times, and almost buy it every time . Only thing stopping me is what the sleeve may look like after being stuffed into a coat sleeve.......and the short length of the top. I really need to try it on.

  • Laura G replied 6 years ago

YAY! Velvet with tee shirt styling--you should be able to wear this with just about anything.

  • Joyce B replied 6 years ago

That is a gorgeous top (and outfit) on you.

  • Greyscale replied 6 years ago

Skylurker and Lisa, the coat struggle is real! For the past few years I have had loose sleeved jacket on my wish list. I have a handful of tops with interesting bulky sleeves, and toppers were always a problem.

I finally found a lightweight jacket with dolman sleeves. The velvet top doesn't wrinkle badly so I just tuck and smooth the sleeves down inside my jacket when I wear it. And if it ever gets cold enough for a winter coat here this year, my warm coat is a cocoon shape with tapered sleeves for this type of top.

  • Greyscale replied 6 years ago

People who bought this top, yay! I was hoping others would. I imagine it will look great on a range of sizes, shapes, and styles.

  • Karie replied 6 years ago

Oh I love this on you! The loose style and the velvet make it super fashionable.

  • Sal replied 6 years ago

I really love this too - perfect for parties and I would wear during the day too.  I like to have a couple of dressy tops to wear with jeans for dinners at friends...I think you will find this super useful.

And the pink is lovely too.....

  • kkards replied 6 years ago

    Love this on you.

  • Roxanna replied 6 years ago

Greyscale - I saw your post and immediately pressed 'buy' (the only thing I have bought this Fall as I am trying to limit shopping.) But I loved this top! Thanks for sharing it - can't wait to style it myself.

  • replied 6 years ago

Went to look at it today and just couldn't do it. For starters, it's 99.95$Cdn , which is ridiculous (they did have a 40% promo today, but still), plus it's just SO short. I can't go there. That is the single worst part of my body (from waist to crotch point) ,and no one needs to be exposed to that. I'll admire it on you from afar :)

  • Greyscale replied 6 years ago

Oh for sure, I bought it at 40% off. It was $90 here, too. Gap pricing is ridiculous at this point. They have promos almost every day. (I don't know if that's as true in Canada?) The exception is jeans, which aren't covered in a lot of their promos and are priced "fairly" to begin with.

  • replied 6 years ago

Yep - same scenario here.  But the store lately looks like a discount garbage heap.  Hard to shop in it.

  • Jenn replied 6 years ago

I love it on you! I'm tempted too, but I suspect it wouldn't look nearly so good on me.

  • Greyscale replied 6 years ago

Jenn, I think it might look awesome on you? (Though for my own wardrobe I worry it might be something I only wear a few times. We'll see.)

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

    It's lovely on you!

  • unfrumped replied 6 years ago

Great find for your style! I think you’ll find a lot of times to wear it.
I love the ride neckline and am a sucker for drapey velvet. May try on. Boxier tops are great for high waisted dressy skirts and pants, though this one might be TOO short for my long torso..

  • cheryl replied 6 years ago

    Looks fantastic on you! :)

  • Greyscale replied 6 years ago

Unfrumped, I have quite a long torso for my height (5'4" with 28" inseam down to the floor, if that helps calibrate). But I'm wearing this with my highest rise jeans and I can't tell if it would seem short to me otherwise.

  • replied 6 years ago

Quietly elegant - such a graceful shape and sumptuous fabric.  It looks terrific on you, Greyscale!

  • LaPed replied 6 years ago

    Love the whole outfit!

  • Beth Ann replied 6 years ago

Love the item, and the way you styled it.  The highwaisted looser jeans create relaxed and modern proportions.  This item would work well over a skirt, as well.

  • unfrumped replied 6 years ago

Ha, typical inventory fake- out— said my local Gap had this in stock so I went to try and they did not. Maybe that is best...!

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Love the top and your styling.
