Floaty dress over jeans

We're heading to a play tonight, and maybe fancy drinks, so dressing up a bit seemed like a fun idea. Inspired by Approprio and Diana, I decided to wear this sheer silk tunic over jeans. It doesn't have the wow factor of the fuller skirts they wore; I'll try that next time. Instead, I stuck with a modified FFBO. I know this Vince tunic has shown up in my posts before.

The shoes are new, the Steve Madden low-heel booties that you all love. They are amazingly comfortable, and I don't say that lightly; I basically can't wear heels but these must be exactly the right shape to support my feet.

I was contemplating Aziraphale's post about RATE alternatives to white jeans... I put on my cropped solid-black skinnies under this, at first, but the effect was too polished and downtown for my current fashion mood. These faded relaxed skinnies took it down a notch. I tried other changes, too - mannish loafers instead of the refined booties, for instance - but settled on this combination. (The jeans are Blank NYC found at Crossroads.)

With my faculty job interview over (it took a serious amount of prep) I'm looking forward to having energy for interesting outfits. My goal is to try a few things that are a little more out there instead of FFBOs like this, much as I like it. (Approprio, I hope you don't mind that you're my inspiration for this!)

And as soon as I'm done with one last job-related meeting, it's time to re-shave the scraggly undercut. Saturday!

I really like your darker and less voluminous version.

You look long and sleek. The booties are a great finishing touch.

I love this version -- I'm a fan of the sheer and sleek tunic for this silhouette. Nicely done, and it's great to see a WIW from you again.

This is fantastic. Love it all. So glad those booties work for you, too. I tried them early in the season and they didn't work for me. They look great!!!

I'm amazed that the shoes work for me, honestly. Not just the heel - I have a pronounced bump on the top of each foot (related to my very high arches - the bones come together at an angle instead of straight). So shoes that cover my instep are usually painful; I mostly stick to open shoes, clunky boots, or lace-up shoes that I can loosen a lot. And, the bend of the sole actually matches my arches for once, which are high enough that I need custom-cast orthotics. So if they fit me, that probably means they're totally wrong on many less extreme feet!

Love this Greyscale. My personal preference is actually this more slimline silhouette over jeans. Great proportions. You look wonderful.

I love this version; it looks like your style dressed up a bit. The new shoes are perfect.

    You look cool. Great outfit.

    Fantastic outfit Grayscale.

Those shoes didn't work at all for me... they were far too loose over the arch.  So makes sense that they work on someone who needs that volume.  Funnily enough, I ended up with a different pair of Steve Madden peep toes which fit perfectly.  Just slightly higher heel.

Your FFBO looks like a special outfit to me. Great choice for your evening out. You look really stylish and cool.

I love your outfit. Great for an evening out.

Wow, Grayscale, this looks absolutely fantastic! I love the rolled jeans...they add a little extra texture to the outfit. Perfect!

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Fabulous! A really cool look. The rolled jeans are a really interesting touch.

I have the exact same booties. The arch isn't quite in the right place for me, and my foot slides a bit-- so at first the peep toe was uncomfortable no matter what. But I have worn them in a bit and they are working. The heel is awesome. Stable and secure.

Really glad they are working well for you!

Shannon has the same ones in the nude tone.

  • Greyscale replied 8 years ago

Yes, Shannon is how I discovered them! I'm glad yours got more comfortable with time.

I have to wear something like this! Great idea! It looks cool and edgy :)

I love this so much! All of it. The shoes look amazing - I didn't know they were still available.

I have a polished version of this outfit that I wear to the opera.  I wear it with heels, skinnies, and the silk sleeveless sheer dress.  I never thought about dressing it down.  Great idea and execution.

Mind? Why madam, I'm delighted! I think you have a wonderful style and I adore that dress. Love the contrast of diaphanous fabric over the weight of the jeans. Nicely done!

Una, it looks like the shoes are almost sold out - only size 6 left.

(The size 6 is marked 36 on the shoe, btw. The 7 is a 37, which I would usually call a 6.5, and it fits me perfectly.)
