WIW: New ankle boots and thrifted bling.

Thanks to all your feedback about my boot question, I returned the expensive Barneys boots. You're right - they weren't exciting enough for me for the price. Then, from a comment on Ironkurtin's post about shopping secrets, I discovered Yoox. And at Yoox I discovered these awesome Newbark boots for a very good price! So, now I have my birthday present from my boyfriend! And I have a Yoox addiction, which might be a problem for my budget.

The rest of this outfit is secondhand clothes, amazingly. I had a few specific items I was looking for this season, including gray boyfriend jeans (found a pair of AGs new with tags at Crossroads in October!) and a sparkly sweatshirt-style top (found this one a few days ago - it is silk and cotton, rather than synthetic, which makes overly-picky-me very happy). The coat was an amazing find a year or two ago, a practically new Club Monaco wool & cashmere overcoat for $30 that is the perfect compromise between a big man-coat and figure-flattering tailoring.

The boots have a bit of bling too, a sparkly texture on the back. Between that and the sweatshirt, it's the most sparkle I've worn since prom!

So, if you can't tell, I love the thrill of the thrift store chase and I'm finally getting better about being picky and not settling for less than ideal. That said, the sparkly top is actually a bit more fitted than I'd been searching for, but I like it better than any others I'd tried on. At $15, if I don't end up wearing it much, I'll just sell it back to them.

Very cool boots - I like the look. Never has your username been more appropriate. ;)

Oh, and I just realized the best thing! These boots are totally silent when I walk. They're leather soles, but not loud at all. It's so nice when I buy new shoes and they actually work out well.

Oh love the combinations of textures and shades and sparkle here! And of course share your thrift store love; what a score on that coat. At least 90% of my wardrobe (excepting shoes and underpinnings) is secondhand, most from just Goodwill but some from ebay. I've only been to a consignment store once though: the staff were snotty and I wasn't impressed with the selection either. Clearly I shouldn't have written all consignment stores off because of one bad apple!

Excellent finds! Those boots would be matchy matchy perfection with my VC coat - it has muted sparkly panels.

Killer boots. And you are definitely Queen Grey. You look wonderful in this vibe, which is beautifully offset by your red hair.

And happy belated birthday for late November. I hope you had a magical day. xo

The boots are awesome. You are very successful in your thrift finds as well!

Happy belated, and you look great.

Love the boots, love thrifting and love Yoox. Actually discovered Yoox through thrifting - often the obscure European brands I would find and try to research would only show up on Yoox. The sparkley sweater looks great with the sparkley boots.

WOW. Those boots are gorgeous. What a terrific find. I think these are going to work much better for you. I also love the coat and the sparkly sweater. It does not look super fitted in the photos. It looks just slightly fluid vs. oversized, which is also a great look.

love the boots! and the little v-detail at the neckline is a nice little touch.

I too love the thrift store search....its really fun, if Im in the mood and have the time, its like an adventure! But I am very picky these days, as I have learned after re-donating the items after I found them things I thought were interesting and out of my comfort range really were!

Your new boots are awesome, and I like them a lot better than the ones from Barneys. The sweater is definitely a new direction for your, but it's still rooted in your core style and I think it looks amazing!

Happy belated birthday from me too.

Thanks, Angie and all! My birthday was indeed lovely - I was home for Thanksgiving surrounded by family.

Killer in every way.  Can I steal your whole closet, please?

Having trouble seeing anything but those boots! They are fabulous. This outfit is great. Love the tones and your styling. Very cool

Love your style! Yoox can be dangerous but clearly paid off for you here LOL.

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Love your boots!! And the roll of the jeans is brilliant! Try as I might I can never get the roll intentionally messy looking! The sweater and boots are gorgeous together!

    Oh! Happy belated birthday!

I have a serious boot addiction and I absolutely crave those. Too fab! :) I have to check out Yoox. I've not heard about it before.

This doesn't warrant its own post as I didn't buy anything, but speaking of thrifted bling, my favorite resale store (Crossroads, the Rockridge location in this case) has TWO pairs of black Rick Owens wedges, Margiela tan heeled boots, and Margiela mint green wedge sandals, ALL MY SIZE, this week. All consigned by the same woman. Holy cow. Who is this woman? I must find her and stalk her closet.

If any of you are a 37 / 6.5 and in the Bay Area, they're each ~$150.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

That's my shoe size too. Hilarious.

I wanted to add that I'm thrilled you've joined our forum. Your killer style is inspiring and your comments are kind, encouraging and supportive. Love that. Thank you. And glad you had a festive family birthday.

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Wow, the coat and boots are sooooo chic.  Love the look

All I have to say is that if you were in my class in high school, i would be afraid to talk to you because you are obviously about a million times cooler than I could ever hope to be!  ;)  So I'm glad we're not in high school!

  • Greyscale replied 10 years ago

Angie, thanks SO much - that means a lot to me. I really like this community.

(I might be spending too much time online right now, though, so I might be a leeeeetle bit less active in the future.)

MaryK, that is so flattering but also sort of hilarious, because if you'd known actual high school me, you'd have a different take on it. I'm so glad I'm twice that age now. I was the class nerd, and while I wasn't bullied too horribly, I was definitely never considered attractive or well-dressed. I do think I had distinctive style back then (combat boots and punk / grunge looks, it being the 90s), but high school was really not a good time for me socially. Then college was wonderful socially (I was at a nerd school ;-) ) but a fashion disaster, and it wasn't til my 20s that I started feeling comfortable in my own clothes. Probably a pretty common story around here! We're all on a style journey, just sometimes at different speeds or at different stages in it.

Very inspired by your great monochromatic look. The boots were an amazing score! I am massively impressed with your thrifting skills :) .... (as i purge yet another stack of thrifted items that arent quite right....!)

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

You have AMAZING style!  I will keep saying that until you whack me over the head.  ;-)

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

These are fantastic outfits-- some of my fave's for you. What great style sense.

You've really hit it, on thrifting. It's just another form of working to be PPP, it's just harder to resist the seemingly great bargain. But if you're very Picky, then you get the 4th P--pleasure! from the great item at the great price.
