WIW: bandana and HEWI shopping

I just got back from a week off the grid at Burning Man, where I was building a large art project. Despite the non-commercial nature of the event, I jumped right back into shopping, thanks to Labor Day sales.

Anna posted a nice writeup of the styles she saw at a local consignment store event. She mentioned that a few women were wearing bandanas or scarves in their hair, a look I used to wear often. I haven't in years, but I found my favorite silk kerchief and gave it a try. Good? Bad?

First photo is today's outfit, with a new pair of R13 slouchy skinnies I found at the consignment store. I keep saying I'm over skinnies, especially low-rise, but I love these. Basically everything R13 is irresistible.

The Gap is killing it with their denim this fall. I've worn the knee length black denim skirt twice a week since I bought it. I saw a black denim jacket and a grey denim shirt in the new arrivals, and I had to have them. They're both HEWIs, especially the shirt.

I'm between a small and XS for both items and I can't decide what to do. I like how the smaller ones look on me but both the shirt and the jacket are tight through the armpits. Perhaps this jacket will be only for wearing with light tees. It's 100% cotton, so it won't stretch much.

Grey shirt: XS only (they didn't have the small)

Jacket: XS first, then S with the white shirt under.

Nice finds! I especially like the jacket over the white shirt. I'm not sure about the sizing. The small looks good in the shoulders, and the XS looks good in the body (from the side view). I'd go with whichever is more comfortable.

Oh, and you look good in the bandana. It gives you a less edgy look, though--I don't see that as bad or good, just a little different, kind of a fun change.

I looooove the bandana and #1 for that very reason is my fav pic here...the whole white over a darker color and the bandana is such a killer look.
I have a very similar shirt to what you're wearing in #2, and I went one size up just because i like denims ( shirts particularly) to feel a bit manly (if that makes sense). It's a great piece and I'm sure will go very well with a zillion things!

I think I would size up-- the denim will wear in and start to follow your body a bit more.

The bandana is fun! Also great for hot weather, I would think.

It is really hard to tell about sizing. I almost want the shirt to be longer which makes me think you should try the S.

As for the jacket, I'm just not sure. It looks good either way so whichever one feels best.

I think you wear the bandana look well. :-)

I think either size *looks* fine on you, but every time I've been between sizes in a denim shirt and gone down, I've ended up not being happy with it. Even just a touch of shrinkage in the laundry and I feel it pull across my back. When you say "tight across the armpits" that's a red flag to me. I'd go with the larger of the two sizes. Then you can easily layer too.

I have the grey version of those jeans and love them. Great black denim jacket - I think I would go for the small.

I agree with what Janet said. Just a touch of laundry shrinkage could kill it.
You do look edgy in the bandana.

Nice job on the bandana. It still looks like you. Now you just need to add heels, HA.
I think the grey shirt is a bit classic in this size. I'd like a bigger size.
I prefer the size small black jacket.

I like the bandana. And am jealous that you thrifted R13s! I miss your outfit posts. I don't like denim shirts too fitted - but that is true of any shirt for me. Is it stiff?

You've all convinced me to try the size up in the shirt and the jacket. There's another Gap store near me that has the shirt in stock, so I'll head there after lunch.

The shirt is nice and soft. I wish it were a bit more tapered through the middle - oversized shirts often hang awkwardly off my chest. But I agree that sizing up would look more modern.

Wow, those R13s were a great find.

What? No pictures from Burning Man?

The bandana - sweet! And like Anna says, 'it still looks like you.'

Would you get s shirt tailored?

  • Angie replied 2 years ago

You look fab in that bandana. FUN.

The Gap - and BR - have been looking fab all year. Agreed. And what Anna said.
