Wide-leg crops: I did it my way

I've been inspired by the Rachel Comey Legion jeans (in Finds) but I just never quite found the right version for me. These Gap jeans checked almost all the boxes: fit well through the hips and waist, comfortable, and a nice faded black wash. Of course, these "crops" were almost floor length on me...

This morning I read Angie's post and immediately cut the tags and chopped 5 1/2" off the jeans. What do you think? If they're too short I can always sew the original hem back on (I love the released hem look of the Rachel Comey version).

What to wear with them was another learning process. I put on this high neck, mid sleeve ribbed top for a sort of 70s vibe, then went outside and discovered it was suddenly cold and rainy. Back inside for a sweater. Attempt one was this cropped cable knit. A good look, but it didn't feel like me.

I realized I'd feel far more like myself in some boxy layers. So the final outfit had this long felted wool cardigan from Uniqlo. Not exactly a spring look! But much more me.

And I like the way you're wearing wide cropped jeans YOUR way. Great length.

I like how your coffee table matches your specs.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

And make sure you go back to the blog post to say how much you like the silhouette.

I think you've done it perfectly. And I love the final outfit, which seems totally you, incredibly cool, and sort of dystopian futuresque. So, of course, it feels just right.

Thanks! I used your suggestion (3" above my ankle bone) even though it felt too short in my mind. Usually I don't cut them short enough. I think the mistake I made in the past was trying to look in a mirror and imagine how they'd look -- photos really work better. If I had longer legs, I'd enjoy the proportions of the Rachel Comey jeans just above the ankle bone, but I'm not sure they'd look intentional enough on me.

I love it. So very you.

    These look great on you.

FWIW, Rachel Comey also makes slim Legions in black. I have a pair en route because I've given up on the wide legged look.

I just noticed the Slim Legion version! It might be more my style. I like these wide leg jeans but I'm not sure I'll make it my signature look, so I'm glad I found an inexpensive version to start with. The Slim Legion is something I'm more likely to invest in than the wide version. Though also I suspect the waist won't be quite right on me.

Love it with a long cardigan! Very modern and looks great on you.

I like the cardigan look a lot. It's like COS!

I like the long cardigan over the cropped jeans look.  Very you.

You rock this! They look elegantly slouchy and definitely no too short. I love the long cardigan too!

You are right about photos - I'm trying to do that more and while I can be utterly horrified by what I see sometimes, it is definitely different from what the mirror shows.

Excellent job. I have wide black Citizens (I think you tried and they didn't work for you) and I fold them way up to get the desired length.

  • SarahTheWhite replied 7 years ago

Wow, I really love the long cardigan over them! I think you look great in all of the photos, but that's definitely my favorite. I can tell that it is perfectly right fo you! How inspiring...

  • Bonnie replied 7 years ago

These look so good on you. I'm thinking I should give them a try.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

UmmLila, I wish I'd kept those jeans! I really like the cut of the leg on those. I'm glad they're working well for you.

Bonnie, go for it - Gap jeans are so affordable. These run a little big. I took the smaller of my two usual sizes, even though I'm usually the larger size at the Gap. I even tried another size down and if I didn't mind tightness across my stomach it would have been better. They don't seem to have stretched out too badly today at least. My only minor complaint is that I will need to wash them more often than some denim; you can tell sometimes that the fiber content holds up better to a few wears, but not these, maybe because of the 15% polyester (not noticeable in the texture or appearance).

Looks great especially in your final outfit. I think getting the cut right is more difficult with wide legs than straights or skinnies.

    Good look!
I also like the cropped sweater, though.

Super fab look! I like the jeans both alone and with the long cardi.

  • Bijou replied 7 years ago

I love this look, the jeans look very good at this length, because it looks intentional. Even the models with the Rachel Comey jeans are wearing heels, so you get the impression of a 3 inch gap, even though they are cut on the ankle. Not everyone needs to wear spring colour, black is wonderful on you.

You owe this look! Love how you translated it to *your* style. So fab and cool!

Just looking for some inspiration for a pair of jeans I'm chopping. Your length is excellent. Thanks for posting

  • rachylou replied 6 years ago

Fantastic. I like the details at the waist of those jeans, also.

  • mtnsofthemoon replied 6 years ago

Fantastic!  Total "personalization".  I love it. and you look great.

I really like the long sleeved sweater in #3 with them AND your smile! :)

  • Runcarla replied 6 years ago

Inspirational styling with the long cardi. Great hack job. I'm seeing released hem wide leg jeans in the wild this fall.

  • cindysmith replied 6 years ago

Love it! It has me thinking about taking scissors to a pair of my pants

  • Deborah replied 6 years ago

Perfect!  I think you nailed the length and that silhouette is so good on you.  Particularly love the longer jacket with them.  I am off to find my sissors lol.  The footwear is so good too!
