shoe zeitgeist

Maybe as a rebound from wearing the same shoes all of January for interviews, I've had my eye on footwear this week. I came across a few at Nordstrom Rack that I couldn't resist.

PSA - the Rack has changed their return policy to 45 days. I should be careful about buying things I'm not sure of!

First up - I want silver shoes. I don't think these are them, though, so they've gone back to the Rack. I love them but I know myself and I would never wear them. They're comfortable but not perfect. There's a bootie version that's similar and more wearable, but if I need mirror silver, oxfords are probably a better choice. Still, the retro, feminine aspect appealed to me (and when have I ever liked something because it's feminine? First time for everything!).

2 But then I was stuck on kitten heels, and I found these lovely Paul Green maryjanes at the Rack when I returned the others. Again, more feminine than my usual, but I think they'd be good with jeans. They're somehow a little avant garde? And surprisingly trendy.  My Paul Green flats are ah-MAZ-ing to wear and these might be too. I need to contemplate it. (I might be between sizes. These sold out long ago and this pair is a returned, refinished pair, so I can't compare with a size up.)

And then while I was looking for those in another size I found these Y's by Yohji Yamamoto sandals for a steal. I need to replace my Mephisto Helens. I was going to get regular Birkenstocks but these might be more me?

Also, I suddenly want cowboy ankle boots. Not real cowboy boots, but the pared-down urban style that Helmut Lang and a few others have had recently. My pointed-toe Allsaints boots are almost worn out after wearing them all month so this might be a good replacement. I suppose I could get silver cowboy boots but that's probably overkill.

Also in Finds:
Some cowboy boot inspiration (the Rag & Bone boots were at the Rack but not in my size; the silver R13 boots are, shall we say, aspirational, at $1300), a pair of kitten heels that I covet but which are out of my price range, and the bootie version of the silver pumps.

I love the Paul Green maryjanes. Although these are way cooler than my maryjanes.

OOH!! I love all of these! The Paul Green Mary Janes are amazing and would stay on and would be great with all kinds of outfits...Also love the Helmut Lang cowboy boots. Are the sandals comfy? They definitely look "you." Silver is tricky...for me it is easy because of my hair but with your red hair I agree you will want to figure out the way you'll wear them. I can see mirror oxfords for sure. But mirror pumps, probably not. Maybe a softer version in a pump or cowboy boot.

I have the JC shoes in black, and will vouch for a comfort. They may seem like a kitten heel to others but to me that heel can still be painful. On the other hand, I am not sure about the shiny silver - that is a matter of personal style. Try pretend lecturing in the PG mary janes and if it works, keep!  Of course it is more fun to have Y's than Birks - but are they as comfortable? My favorite of all are the Reike Nen slingbacks. Love them and think they are great for you style.

I like the silver pumps. Too bad they weren’t perfect

    Have you seen these?

Ooh I do love Jeffrey bootie version of the silver pumps....

Suz and Shevia, the sandals are pretty comfortable and I think they'll break in nicely. Similar footbed to Birks but with less arch support. One nice thing is that they don't have a strap over my "foot bump" (the bones make a sharp angle on my instep). The Birks I'd get, and the Mephistos, and even my awesome Dr Martens sandals, all put pressure on it. So I'll wear them around the house and see.

JAileen, I didn't realize those came in silver! I just saw them in black in a store window this week. Hmm.

And yes the Rieke Nens are so lovely -- but $340, and sold out in my size. Alas.

Those kitten heels really intrigue me... they are seriously on my mind.

The Paul Green maryjanes are gorgeous! Coincidence, they look like the lower-heeled sisters of pumps I've been coveting for a while (attached photo). I love the side cutouts, which break an otherwise classical shoe shape.

The shape of the vamp of the silver pumps looks very trendy to me, when the booties would be, indeed, retro and feminine (but still modern due to the color). I would not know how to style them though.

Love the Paul Green Mary Jane pumps.  The sandals are nice too.

Paul Green maryjanes ❤️. They would look great with almost any outfit you put on!

Love the Mary Janes and the silver shoes. I generally don’t like Mary Janes, but these are more angular than rounded and the placement of the strap is more appealing. I also love those cowboy boots.

I know what you mean about being on the hunt for feminine shoes -- I think it's a contrast thing -- sneakers and chelsea boots etc can feel kind of predictable when you pair them with jeans. Also, if you're wearing menswear-inspired clothes, it can be hard to feel "dressed up" without channeling a little femininity with your footwear.

I love the strappy PG mary janes, and they look extremely versatile. I'm a big fan of all the cowboy boot riffs in Finds as well, especially the Rag and Bone pair.

Well I am useless because I love all of these on you. I wear boots with anything and everything, so for me, boots are as versatile as a pump and usually much more comfortable. I do like the look of the PG Mary Jane, which surprises me, as generally I am not a fan of the Mary Jane style.

The Mary James are a great version and I think “ juxtapose “ well with your edgier pieces. - I vote keep!
I find shiny silver foitwesr( all- over silver) hard to wear- I feel too exposed and like my feet are just out there . But YMMV.

That is a nice shoe repertoire :-)
I love the Riekes and the PG Mary Janes.
I have the same PGs and they are very comfortable and fun looking. I hope they will work for you. The price is good only if you will wear them...

Love the black ones in nr 2-3 instead of regular pumps! Really edgy!:-)

Love the silver booties! Also the Free People shoes JAileen posted. I struggle with pumps, not sure why. Maybe they just aren't "me".

  • cindysmith replied 6 years ago

    Those Helmut Lang booties <3<3<3<

I like the kitten heels too

    Love the MaryJanes!

  • Angie replied 6 years ago

The pretty Paul Greens look GORGEOUS on your feet. I'm not sure you will wear them.....

I vote these for you - and Western boots are trending, btw,

  • approprio replied 6 years ago

Coveting your Y's sandals, and agreeing with Angie on the Reike Nen sling-backs. Also - those Helmut Lang boots. I die.

  • Elizabeth P replied 6 years ago

What an amazing collection of footwear!  Both yours and the suggestions.

  • replied 6 years ago

I like the all saints cowboy-like boots.
I also like the Paul greens, but they are unexpected for your style. (They don’t seem as hard edge.) But sometimes you want something a little different. I can understand that.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 6 years ago

I like the point toe pumps, R13 and HL western boots the best. But tbh, these are all good choices.

  • Lynn replied 6 years ago

Boy did you luck out. I really really love the Paul Green's. They look great on your foot. And the Yohji sandals are terrific.

For some reason the silver kitten heels just seem too much. I think it is their degree of shine. However I really like the Free People shoe JAileen posted that is more muted. But that is just my aesthetic.
