Hi all! WIW, KR

I've been very busy at work and, thus, not thinking as much about clothes. But I thought I'd stop back and catch up on all your posts and ask for opinions on a few looks.

1-2. WIW: denim shirtdress, waxed coating. A black denim shirt has been a HEWI, and I realized this tunic/dress actually works better on me than a denim shirt. I haven't gotten used to the boxy shirt styles that are in right now and how they interact with my chest. I think the length of this dress pulls the fabric down and prevents the balloon look. I found this one at a consignment store (7 for all mankind).

I wore this out with chunky flat sandals during the day, and Dr Martens boots at night. Sorry the footwear isn't visible. I wish I'd taken a photo after I put on makeup - lime green eyeshadow that I think added a fun twist.

3. Equipment silk shirt that I decided to return - a size too big. But I love the pattern.

4-5. Everlane square silk shirt. This is flying off their shelves. I can't decide if I like it on myself (chest issues, again) but I think it works pretty well and it's definitely trendy. My only hesitation is that the silk is washed black, not deep black, and that limits which of my black(ish) pants I can wear it with. I usually prefer solid black tops with faded/distressed denim. Keep?

5-7. Frye boots I found at the Rack yesterday for only $70.  My boyfriend loves them. What do you think?

Tall boots are hard on me, because my lower legs are so short. These look better than any other tall boots I've tried. But they're too tight to wear over skinny jeans and I'm just not sure how much I'll wear them. They're maybe 1/4 size too small, but the next size up was too tall (and $230...)

8-9. WIW last week: jumping on the neckerchief train! I got these new R13 jeans on final sale and sadly they're a size too big. But I added a belt the next day and they looked quite good as a slim boyfriend, so disaster was averted.

    Great to see you!

I love the tunic/ dress on you. How does it feel when you sit? Could you also wear it unbuttoned (over something, obviously!) for another look?

Shame about the Equipment shirt -- it is gorgeous. It doesn't look too big in the photo but I know that can be deceiving.

I like the Everlane shirt a lot as well but then I do like boxy as a rule. This has nice drape to it. Only you can determine if the colour will be versatile enough for you. I think you'll have to try it on with various bottoms to see how you feel.

Boots, oh boots. I identify so much with your fit issues as mine are the same -- short calves. These do look good but if you can't wear them with jeans tucked (and that is something you'd like to do) and they feel snug, I worry they might become orphans. On the other hand, if the "1/4 size too small" can dealt with, courtesy a little stretch, then these are classic enough that you would have them for a long time.

    Love the neckerchief!

Update on the boots: They're going back. I wore them while writing the post and eating lunch, just sitting in my chair, and my feet ached when I took them off. I guess they were tighter than I realized. As usual the problem is my high instep.

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

Oh no. That is sad. I consider tall boots and bras to be two of my most difficult items to fit. In my climate it is very frustrating as tall boots can be a godsend. However -- you did the right thing. Aching feet are no joke. Onwards.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

Oh well, I was just going to tell you how much I liked the boots. The neckerchief look worked well.

  • Tanya replied 7 years ago

So nice to see you here, Greyscale!
I am sorry that the boots and the Equipment top did not work out, but you are so right to send back items that do not fit well.
The first outfit looks gorgeous on you, that shirt dress is really terrific.  I also really like the soft black of Everlane blouse, but you have to make sure it works well with your wardrobe. and you totally nailed it with the last outfit, cool edgy interpretation of the neckerchief.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

Well, the positive reaction to the boots means I will keep an eye out to see if the larger size goes on clearance!

  • Elizabeth P replied 7 years ago

Well, I like everything you posted.  Obviously the fit of the boots doesn't show up in pics.  But the equipment shirts both look great in the photos, sorry the patterned one is too big.  I like the boxy drapey one on you, and as Suz said I think you'll have to be the judge of the colour.  Typically I don't care for a washed black on me... it drags me down much like grey does.  But that's me.

Great to see you. I love the look of the boots pity they don't work.

  • catgirl replied 7 years ago

Is that the metallic silky stars pattern? If so I just got the long sleeve version at the Rack!

I like the dress a lot although I don't know if I could handle a waxed dress - is it stiff? That is a chest issue for me.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

It's not stiff - but it sure is warm! :-/

I think it was at the consignment store because someone had ironed it and the wax got super shiny and stiff. But I threw it in the wash, warm (I usually do denim in cold water), and hung it to dry, and the coating looks better now. I don't like shiny for daytime wear so I'll probably keep washing it to remove more. It's described as dry clean only.

Love your neckerchief outfit!  The large R13s look great on you, and I bet they are comfortable.

Fit has to work on footwear so glad you discovered they are too tight before wearing them outside.

    Score on 7FAM dress!

  • Jaime replied 7 years ago

Too bad about the boots. Your last outfit is my favorite, and the tunic dress has a lot of potential.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

I like the denim dress on you; it seems a perfect version of the denim dress trend for you--black and with an edge, thanks to the coating. Too bad about the Frye boots, but even at a bargain you want them to fit just right. The height was perfect. Nordstrom usually has some good tall-boot selections for the Anniversary Sale.
I love your last outfit, too; slouchy, washed denim and a neckerchief is a great idea. Glad the oversized jeans worked out--I really like this look.
The Everlane shirt is a conundrum. I like it on you, but if it's not a shade of black that is easy to pair with your jeans, it seems kind of like a non-starter.

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

Neckerchief! Yay! I love this trend. The boots are a highlight. Agree re. 2 top. Think the other two are very on Bay Area trend as well, completely fashionable.

  • olga replied 7 years ago

oh, 1 and 6 and 9 are my favorites, i like your edgy style!

  • viva replied 7 years ago

Hi Greyscale! I love that dress/tunic and I've never seen a coated denim one before -- that is VERY cool. I had to smile at your comment about the "balloon" effect. I actually kind of like that with a dress sometimes, if we're talking about the same thing, where it balloons in the back ... it's not sleek but I find it kind of interesting and flattering in a weird way. ANYWAY, I digress. You look great in that dress and I would steal it if I could, as I love shirtdresses and denim.

Unlike Suz, I'm not a boxy top fan, but I do really like that Everlane top on you - however, I get the washed black issue. Will be interested to see what you decide to do about it.

So sorry those cool boots did not work out. I was imagining them in all sorts of outfits.

And LOVE your WIW. Little neck scarves are awesome.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

Viva - I do like that balloon effect on dresses! This dress is meant to be belted, but I think it looks better loose, in part because of a subtle version of that balloon thing. The Find below shows how Shopbop styled it. Of course my height is very different than the model, but I selfishly prefer my own look.

I just have trouble finding shirts that give the right effect. But some of that is just the difference between looking in the mirror (never very accurate) and taking a photo of an outfit (helps me see it as others do). I should remember to take photos more often!

  • Diana replied 7 years ago

    Good to see you!

I love the shirtdress and the r13 jeans! Both seem very you as well.

That's too bad about the fryes. They look amazing though so I think you should definitely keep an eye out for the larger size.

The ever lane shirt looks good on you. I'm jealous of people who can wear that shape of shirt as it just makes me look wide at the hip and droopy at the shoulder. I know what you mean about the washed black being an issue though.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

Thanks, Diana! The funny thing about this shirt is that it works on a far bigger set of shapes than I expected. This one works on me and on my shopping buddy with a totally different body type. That doesn't mean it would necessarily work on you, for sure, but I was surprised by how versatile it is.

I think I'm going to try it with solid black jeans and hope that the contrast between the washed black is enough to look intentional.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

Thanks to all your feedback, I decided to keep the faded grey shirt. I like how it drapes. I wore it today with solid black jeans so the faded top looks intentional. I'm not sure if it'll work with my other jeans but this is ok. I might also pull out my one pair of light blue jeans!

  • Style Fan replied 7 years ago

I like your style.  Edgy, black and avant guarde.  Too bad about the boots.  I love my Fryes.  Worth the investment.  Mine are 10 years old.  Love the dress.   What a score.  And #9 and #10.
