A mini-trend I'm loving: fishnet ankle socks

For years I've wanted a pair of fishnet ankle socks, and suddenly they're all over the stores. I grabbed a pair at Nordstrom Rack, but I've also seen them at Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters. I'm not sure why I like the idea so much -- fishnet tights are a little too va-va-voom for my usual look (though I wore them all the time in college).

I wore them last week with cuffed straight jeans and my Dr Martens sandals, and I got a compliment walking down our most hipster-filled street. I don't think they looked too extreme, more like just a little detail to add edge to my outfit. (I didn't think to take a photo.)

What do you all think? Would you wear this?

Next I want a pair in skin-tone or pale pink. And I also like the related trend of ankle socks with block heels.

I love the look! I would wear it with a closed shoe. Fun socks goes with the alluring ancle trend.

I especially like the nude micro-fishnets.  I used to wear that look all the time with the pointy heels and bootcuts.  The ankle socks look like a fresh way to bring back that style.

This is interesting to me. I've never thought about wearing them, but could see them working with some outfits. I would have to take a look with sandals, as I'm not sure that's a look I'd do without it being closed toe.

Yes! I have been thinking about it. Here some women are wearing ankle socks as a way of extending their booties - to make them look more like high shaft booties. I have also seen this look with booties. I prefer it because it looks a bit dressier than regular socks. I would wear it with a skirt. And just have maybe a inch of the ankle socks peeking out.

These are cool and I like the look with sandal bootie type shoes in particular. I find fishnets really uncomfortable underfoot though - like walking on a cheese grater. Wish they would make some with a solid sole or something...

Diana, there's a pair at Urban Outfitters that does have a solid sole! I want them too. I couldn't get Finds to work so here's the link:

(Hm, UO has tons of great ankle socks right now.)

I'm into this too. I think it looks super sexy with a block heel sandal and jeans .

I used to wear nude fishnets -- this is interesting!

I kinda like it myself. I have no idea how I would wear it, but it's intriguing.

I love a cheap to try trend.

  • Diana replied 7 years ago

Ooh, those UO ones are very tempting! (On the other hand I recently counted my socks for some crazy reason and I have like 80 pairs, no kidding, so I prob shouldn't be buying socks...)

  • Gigi replied 7 years ago

Awesome! I found a pair in nude a couple of months ago, but the retailer was sold out in black. Great to know that other places have them now.

  • Elle replied 7 years ago

What a fun trend!  Thanks for the heads up.  I'm definitely going to look for a pair.

I love ankle fishnets too!! :)

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

Yes i would edge and detail. Oh snap pictures next time okay.

  • harmonica replied 7 years ago

The urban outfitters socks looks great! I've been looking for a solid sole, too.

I might wear these with the right shoe, for me that might be an open toe bootie. I love the sound of your DM sandals with them tho, sounds edgy and fun.

  • Style Fan replied 7 years ago

I love these.  I love your DM sandals.  I had a pair of those in the 90s.  Now I want them.

This is very Harajuku. I have a client who wears this look well.

  • Lisa replied 7 years ago

I only recently noticed this trend and I think it's fun.

  • cheryl replied 7 years ago

Oh my gosh! I had that exact pair in the eighties and loved them. I had no idea they were back but i will be looking for some. :) Yay!

  • LaPed replied 7 years ago

I like it as lot, and may well try it. I'm desperately in need of non-winter socks this year. All of mine seem to be falling apart in unison, so an ankle socks stock-up is in order.

I just found my older mid calf ones. Also have a white pair with red & yellow sports stripes at the top. Love the look.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

Anna, I think maybe you posted an outfit with fishnet socks a few years ago that was one of my inspirations.

  • Runcarla replied 7 years ago

Brilliant way to add something extra to an outfit.

  • BrieN replied 7 years ago

My daughter in NYC would definitely wear that combo; she already has the sandals.

  • RobinF replied 7 years ago

Hmm, they are pretty cute. Not sure how I would wear them but it would be fun to give them a try.

  • Sara L. replied 7 years ago

I love this idea but I'm not sure how I would wear them.  I love socks and have close to 100 pairs so I'm sure one more pair wouldn't hurt anything. :)

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

These seem wonderful for your style the way that you are wearing them, especially in black.
I love wearing these when it is cold and I need something on my feet/ankles but have not tried them with open shoes or sandals. I like the bit of texture that shows on me when I sit down. Off to Nordstrom to replenish.

Greyscale -- Have you seen this blog article?  http://dresslikeaparisian.com/.....-fishnets/  I thought the "skater look" style might appeal to you. (I like this blog for the detailed, no nonsense advice and for the accidental humor and and funny tone caused by translation to English.)

  • Elizabeth P replied 7 years ago

Ohhhhh......  I like this.  I'm not sure I'd wear them with open toes, but I love the idea of fishnet ankles with fashion sneaks, or booties, or loafers - esp for this transitional season.  And I feel like our "transitional season" could take months to actually "transition" this year, so anything fun to spice it up is welcome.

And UA just happens to be a block from my office....

Emily K - cool article! I hadn't seen it. I should read that blog! I'm so amused by her comment about cutting fishnets to turn them into a shirt because I did that too back then (not knowing it was a thing).
